There are nine generations of Pokémon, each with its own unique set of features and rules. Here’s a short list of all of them:
Generation I (1996–1999) was part of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow and introduced the world to the original 151 Pokémon and laid the groundwork for all future games. It also established a number of conventions that have been used in every generation since, such as HMs, gyms, types, Poké Balls, and more.
Generation II (1999–2002) was part of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and was the first to introduce new features such as Pokémon breeding, day/night cycles, and held items. It also introduced 100 new Pokémon.
Generation III (2002–2006) was part of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and added a number of significant changes to the series, including abilities, natures, and improved graphics. It also introduced 135 more Pokémon for a total of 386.
Generation IV (2006–2010) was part of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum and focused on improving the online play experience with Wi-Fi battles and trade options. This generation also introduced 107 new Pokémon for a total of 493.
Generation V (2010–2013) was part of Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 and overhauled the battle system with triple battles and rotational battles. It added 156 more Pokémon for a total of 649.
Generation VI (2013–2016) was part of Pokémon X and Y and introduced the Fairy-type and Mega Evolution, as well as bringing back some old features from previous generations. It was also the first generation in full 3D. It added 72 new Pokémon for a total of 721.
Generation VII (2016–2019) was part of Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon and focused on refining the core gameplay while introducing significant changes such as Z-Moves and Ultra Beasts. This generation adds 88 new Pokémon for a total of 809.
Generation VIII (2019–2022) was part of Pokémon Sword and Shield and introduced some exciting new mechanics with Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing. This generation has added 96 new Pokémon so far, for a total of 905.
Generation XI (2022-present) is part of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and introduced an open world and added a total of 111 new Pokémon so far for a total of 1016 – but this number is about to change since there are still DLCs coming.
