Each bear is also categorized as either a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore. This means if their diet consists mostly of meat, they are considered carnivores. If their diet consists mostly of fruits and leaves, they are herbivores, and if they eat both plants and animals, they are omnivores.

Kinds of bears

Everybody loves bears, even though they’re quite dangerous. They just have this certain attitude, right?

Here’s a list of the most popular bears all around the globe:

Panda bears

Panda bears are loveable and a main attraction in many zoos. They have a distinct look with their black and white fur and are originally from the mountain regions of China. Pandas are considered omnivores and eat mostly bamboo, but they also like to snack on fish and rodents every now and then.

Sadly, panda bears are endangered and can only be found in the wild in a few locations.

Black Bears

Black bears are common in North America and are the smallest of all bear species. They have black fur, but sometimes it can be brown or even blond! Black bears are omnivores and like to snack on anything from nuts and berries to insects and even the occasional small mammal or fish.

Black bears are usually shy and unassuming, but they can be dangerous if provoked. So it’s important to give them their space in the wild.

If you were an insect, which one would you be? Definitely no cockroach, right?

Brown Bears

Brown bears are the most numerous species of bear in the world. They are mostly found in Europe and Asia, but there is also a healthy population in North America. Brown bears have brown fur and an impressive size – they can be as tall as 2 meters (6 feet) when standing!

Brown bears are omnivores and feed on anything from plants to fish, small mammals, and even carrion.

Grizzly Bears

Grizzly bears are powerful predators with incredible strength. They have brown fur and can appear almost black if their hair is wet or dusty. Grizzlies live in the western regions of North America, but there’s also a population in northern Canada.

Grizzly bears are omnivores that eat mostly meat but also sometimes plants. They usually hunt for fish, small mammals, and carrion but also scavenge for food if needed.

In the wild, Grizzlies can be tremendously dangerous animals.

Polar Bears

Polar Bears are impressive animals with white fur and a thick layer of fat to keep them warm in very cold climates. Polar bears can only be found in the Arctic regions of North America and northern Europe & Asia. They are carnivores that feed almost exclusively on seals.

Polar bears are quite shy creatures – they don’t like to be around humans and will usually try to avoid contact if possible. But they can also be very dangerous, so it’s best to keep your distance from them.

Dogs and bears are closely related. Check out what dog breed you are!

Sloth Bears

Sloth bears are found in the forests of India and Sri Lanka. They have a distinctive look with black fur and long claws, adapted for digging and eating termites! Sloth bears are omnivores that usually feed on insects, fruit, honey, and nectar.

Sloth bears may appear cute and cuddly, but they can get quite defensive when threatened – so it’s important to give them their space if you encounter one in the wild.

Sun Bears

Sun Bears are native to Southeast Asia and are the smallest of all bear species. They have golden-brown fur and very long claws – perfect for climbing trees! Sun bears are omnivores that feed mostly on fruits, nuts, and even insects.

Sun bears can be quite shy in the wild, but they will fiercely protect their territory if threatened. So it’s best to keep your distance from them if you encounter one in the forest.

Trees are majestic plants. Which tree are you?
